Idit Ohel, the mother of Serbian citizen Alon Ohel, who is held captive in Gaza, spoke to “Blic uživo.” In her deeply emotional testimony, she revealed the latest information she has about her son Alon, who has not seen daylight for 600 days. According to other captives from Gaza, Alon is severely injured and plays the piano on his body every day so he doesn’t forget the skill.

In her emotional confession, Idit revealed that Alon is not being fed, he is exhausted, and everyone is having a very difficult time due to the situation her family found themselves in when Hamas members attacked Israel in the Gaza Strip during a popular festival.

“I have hope and faith that he will return home alive. We just have to make it possible for him. We have to make the world see what is happening and demand that the hostages return home. The only way to bring the hostages back alive is through an agreement, not some military strategy, because that is very dangerous for the hostages,” says Idit.

She emphasizes that she believes the Serbian authorities will continue to fight and demand the release of her son, because he is a Serbian citizen.

“The hostages who managed to return told me about the way they were held. They kept them in a very small space, 40 meters underground in a tunnel. They received a small amount of food per day, one pie or something very, very little. They are chained at their ankle joints, and there is no air down there, as they are deep underground in tunnels. It’s very difficult because they even have to ask to go to the toilet; sometimes they allow it, and sometimes they don’t,” says Idit.

As she says, the captives are not aware of what is happening in the world. They have no television or radio, so they don’t know what’s going on.

“The hostages who were with Alon for almost 500 days, for example, didn’t know that their families were no longer alive. Alon knows nothing about us, about our family, about everything we’re doing for him. But I think he feels it; that’s what the freed hostages told me,” says Idit, adding:

“He feels that we are fighting, but he doesn’t know about the actions we organized, for example, about the yellow piano that was all over the world. He doesn’t know that, he doesn’t see us on the news, which is sad, because if he could, it would help him feel good or at least a little better. To see us, to know that we love him and that we are sending him a lot of love and hope. The freed hostages tell me that Alon plays the piano on his body to preserve the skill he has in his hands. Which is wonderful to hear, but he is generally very weak because he doesn’t get enough food. Mentally he is well; he knows who he is, where he is, and what is happening to him, but now he is left alone,” says the unfortunate young man’s mother.

Alon doesn’t count days, his mother says, he counts every minute.

“Every minute is important; for almost 600 days, he hasn’t seen sunlight, he hasn’t seen the sky! Alon is also severely injured. He has shrapnel fragments all over his body from a bomb that exploded at the moment he was abducted. It was heavy artillery; bombs and grenades were thrown, and he was injured. He has shrapnel in his eye; he can’t see with his right eye. He still has shrapnel fragments in his shoulder. No one has removed them. The Red Cross has never seen Alon. He has never received medical attention. He is trying to survive these tragic injuries. He also has a severe head injury because when he was abducted, he was on a truck and they hit him on the head with the butt of a rifle. I know Alon is strong, I know he is waiting to come home, and I know we will never give up,” she says.

Pray for Alon, play and sing for him, because I truly believe it will help him, says this unhappy woman.

“Some list has been made, and I truly hope that Alon will be on it, even though the idea of selection is terrible. I hope that all 20 hostages will come home alive. Negotiations are still ongoing. He was supposed to be home on March 8 of this year; Hamas said that,” says Idit.
