Stanford University in the United States has published the latest list of the world’s most influential researchers, which includes more than 110 researchers from Serbia, and the University of Belgrade announced today that these results contribute to the reputation of Serbian science.
In this year’s edition of the list of most influential researchers, the best-ranked scientists employed at the University of Belgrade include Dragan Pamučar, Miroslav Dramićanin, Milan Janić, Petar Seferović, Gordana Ćirić-Marjanović, and others.
-We congratulate all scientists, researchers, and professors who have achieved exceptional results and contributed to the reputation of our University and Serbian science – stated the Prorector for Science of the University of Belgrade, Prof. Dr. Vladimir Cvetković, in the announcement.
This list, which is published annually by the American Stanford University and the international academic publisher Elsevier, includes, in its 2025 edition, scientists from all over Serbia, in addition to those from the University of Belgrade. This is a list where researchers are ranked by the results they have achieved throughout their careers, and it includes both active and deceased scientists, as their works are still cited today.
The scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields. The ranking methodology is based on a composite criterion.
They state that the list was created using data from the Scopus database and is based on an indicator that includes six citation metrics: total number of citations, Hirsch’s h-index, Schreiber’s hm-index (adjusted for co-authorship), number of citations of works where the scientist is the sole author, number of citations of works as the first or sole author, and number of citations of works as the sole, first, or last author.
They point out that the ranking of scientific results is always sensitive and complex, and in the methodology used, the number of publications itself does not affect the composite indicator and the final ranking.
-The influence of a scientist can be achieved with a very small number of works, even with only one or two published works, and still be included in the list. Conversely, scientists with an extremely large number of publications may, but do not have to be, ranked highly, as a large number of works can be a consequence of productivity, but also of manipulative practices. Furthermore, it is important to point out that presence on the list does not automatically mean that a scientist is excellent, just as absence from the list does not mean that a scientist is not valuable or does not produce quality work – the announcement states.
They add that the list is a statistical cross-section based on citations, and bibliometric data have their limitations and cannot fully reflect all aspects of scientific contribution.
