High-altitude mountaineers from the Javorak mountaineering club in Paraćin are constantly testing their physical limits. On May 20, one of them, Igor Stefanović, achieved a new feat by climbing Toubkal – at 4,167 meters, the highest peak in North Africa in the Atlas Mountains, located in southwestern Morocco, 63 kilometers from Marrakech.
“With friends from the OPSD ‘Dragan Radosavljević’ in Zaječar, I could only get by transport to Imlil, at 1,740 meters above sea level. From there, we continued on foot, an eleven-kilometer trail, to the Azib Tamsoult mountain hut. There, at 3,207 meters, we spent the night and prepared for the final ascent, which began four hours after midnight and lasted until nine in the morning,” Stefanović reported to “Novosti” from Morocco, as he will remain in Africa until the middle of next week.
He explains that the final trail to Toubkal was three and a half kilometers long, with an altitude difference of 950 meters. At the summit, they could only stay briefly for rest and photos, and the demanding return to Imlil lasted until the evening. There, Igor’s extraordinary mountaineering adventure ended, but not his journey through Morocco, where he will stay until next Tuesday to explore this African country.

The Atlas is a mountain range in northwestern Africa that stretches not only through Morocco but also Algeria and Tunisia. It also serves as a climatic boundary between the humid climate of northwestern Africa and the Sahara. According to legend, this massif got its name from the giant Atlas of Greek mythology, who held the celestial sphere on his back.
In about two decades of intensive mountaineering, Igor Stefanović has climbed all the peaks of the Balkans up to 3,000 meters. In August 2022, he fulfilled his long-held wish and soared “under the clouds” to over 5,000 meters above sea level, conquering Great Ararat in Turkey.
Most mountaineers wish to climb this mountain and its highest peak, Toubkal, at least once in their lives, and Stefanović has made that dream come true.
