Milan Čanak, the son of Marija Vasić, told N1 that the family unofficially learned that his mother, during the period when they didn’t know which hospital she had been transferred to, was at the Clinical Center of Vojvodina (KCV) so they could stabilize her enough for her to survive the journey to Belgrade.

Milan says he last saw his mother on Tuesday when he went to visit her in Klisa.

“Her husband David, who had an extraordinary visit yesterday while she was still in Klisa, was the last to see her from the family and lawyers. We were told there that she could no longer walk, that she spoke with difficulty, and that she was fainting. Then we were unofficially told that she would be moved to a hospital in Belgrade. We weren’t told which one or when. We immediately headed to Belgrade, not even knowing which hospital she would be transferred to. We have a gap of a few hours where we didn’t know where she was at all. Now we know, but at that moment, we didn’t know where she was, what her condition was, or if she was alive,” he explains.

Ultimately, he says, they unofficially learned that during that period, Marija Vasić was at the Clinical Center of Vojvodina (KCV).

“She was at KCV to be stabilized as much as possible so she could survive the journey to Belgrade,” he points out.

When asked if the family knows about Marija’s condition after she was admitted to the hospital in Belgrade, he says:

“All the information we have is unofficial because no one is reporting anything to us; we haven’t received any official letter or report about anything. From unofficial sources, we know that she received an IV and that she is somewhat better. So, they stabilized her. I don’t know if she is still on strike, but even if she isn’t, she shouldn’t drink water or eat right now because her kidneys could fail,” he states.

“My mother wrote two books about the Holocaust. She teaches sociology, specifically about the Holocaust and fascist regimes. That’s what bothers this regime – educated people who recognize what fascism is, and fascism is what you’re seeing now,” says Marija Vasić’s son.

When asked how the family is coping with the situation, he states:

“Her husband was in shock yesterday when he saw her after two months. It was the first time he saw her because he didn’t have permission to visit her. And for the first time in two months, he saw her after three days of hunger strike, where she was in a catastrophic state. So, he was in shock. My younger brother too, he misses his mother. And I’m holding on, and we’re fighting here, and we’ll be here until the political prisoners are released,” he emphasizes.

Marija Vasić, an activist and sociology professor at “Jovan Jovanović Zmaj” High School, was transferred to a Belgrade hospital yesterday after three days of hunger and thirst strike in a Novi Sad prison.

For two days, judicial institutions in Novi Sad have been blocked due to the detention of six activists and students from the opposition Movement of Free Citizens (PSG) and the organization Students Against Authoritarian Rule (STAV).

They have been in detention for 60 days, accused of attempting to overthrow the constitutional order, and the court extended their detention for another 30 days on Tuesday.

Another six STAV activists are charged with the same offense, and they were abroad at the time of their arrest, where they remain today.

All of them are accused based on an audio recording of an illegally wiretapped conversation, which was broadcast on regime televisions on March 14.

The defendants’ lawyers have repeatedly claimed that the Security Information Agency (BIA) illegally wiretapped the conversation and added that the audio recording cannot be legally valid evidence in the process.
