Members of the Criminal Police Directorate entered the building of the Faculty of Philosophy following the death of a young woman who fell from the fifth floor of the institution last night.
The Special Department for Combating Corruption of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade, based on Article 282, Paragraph 4 of the Criminal Procedure Code, submitted a request to the Anti-Corruption Department of the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Serbia to collect necessary information regarding the events at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Belgrade on March 26, 2026. At around 22:40, several sprays and firecrackers were ignited on the fifth floor, after which a female person jumped through a window onto the plateau in front of the faculty and lost her life.
The request was submitted due to grounds for suspicion of omissions by the dean, vice-deans, and the vice-dean for teaching in relation to the safety of students and staff at the faculty.
In that regard, the police were ordered, due to threats to general safety, life, physical integrity, health, and property, to enter the Faculty of Philosophy building as soon as possible and examine all circumstances related to the incident, as well as to obtain all regulations of the Faculty of Philosophy governing safety, work organization, entry procedures, and working hours.
This was ordered to determine whether safety at the Faculty of Philosophy was in accordance with these regulations, and if not, to identify the nature of any omissions.
It was also ordered to verify whether the faculty had a functional counseling service and protocols for assisting students in crisis, whether these mechanisms were available to students, and whether the deceased—if a student—had previously reported psychological issues to the competent faculty services.
Additionally, it is necessary to gather all evidence on whether the relevant services had knowledge of any issues concerning the deceased person, and if so, to determine how the institution acted upon such knowledge, as well as whether the dean, as the managing authority, acted in accordance with protocols.
Among other things, it was also ordered to obtain all decisions and acts issued by the dean concerning:
Ensuring the physical security of the facility, adopting and implementing occupational safety and fire protection measures, organizing security services and access control to the faculty building, as well as responsibility for safety during teaching and extracurricular activities.
We remind that the Special Department for Combating Corruption of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade has also joined the investigation into all circumstances and conditions under which the fatal incident occurred at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Belgrade after working hours, where pyrotechnic devices were simultaneously ignited, as confirmed to RTS by the Chief Public Prosecutor of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade, Nenad Stefanović.
The prosecution will, among other things, examine whether there is criminal liability of the Faculty of Philosophy’s management staff in relation to the safety of work and study, Stefanović specified.
He pointed out that an on-site investigation was carried out last night and that the prosecution ordered an autopsy with toxicology analysis of the deceased in order to determine the exact cause of death.

Ministry of Interior on the tragedy
The head of the Stari Grad police station, Radenko Resanović, said last night that the police received a report at around 22:40 that a female person showing no signs of life was on the plateau in front of the Faculty of Philosophy.
“We received information from eyewitnesses that pyrotechnic devices were activated on the fifth floor, after which an unidentified female person, around 25 years old, most likely a student of the faculty, jumped through the window,” said Resanović.
Resanović added that the competent prosecutor’s office was notified and ordered an investigation.
“Our investigation teams are on the ground, statements from eyewitnesses are being collected and all evidence is being documented. The pyrotechnic devices that were activated were extinguished after some time by faculty staff. For now, we have no information on how they entered the faculty premises. Any ignition and improper use of pyrotechnic devices that can endanger the lives of citizens is to be strongly condemned. Any improper handling of such devices is unacceptable, as we can see the consequences they may lead to,” he said.
