Serbian Patriarch Porfirije has arrived in Moscow, where he will stay during Bright Week, and during the visit, the Moscow Theological Academy will award him an honorary doctorate in theological sciences.

A delegation of the Serbian Orthodox Church, led by Serbian Patriarch Porfirije, arrived in Moscow last night at the invitation of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, the SOC announced.

Accompanying the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church are Archbishop of Novi Sad and Metropolitan of Bačka Irinej, Abbot of Kovilj Monastery Archimandrite Hariton, Chief of the Patriarch’s Cabinet Protopresbyter Đorđe Stojisavljević, Rector of the Seminary in Belgrade Protodeacon Radomir Vrućinić, Protodeacon Radojica Žagran, monk of Kovilj Monastery Archdeacon Justin, Deacon Ivan Vasiljević, as well as subdeacons Dejan Nakić and Vladimir Jelić.

At Sheremetyevo Airport, the guests were welcomed by Metropolitan Anthony of Volokolamsk, Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, and Serbian Ambassador to the Russian Federation Momčilo Babić.

Also present at the welcome ceremony were Bishop Stefan of Remeziana, head of the Representation of the SOC in Moscow, advisor to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Protopresbyter Nikolai Balashov, Deputy Chairman of the Department for External Church Relations Protopresbyter Igor Yakimchuk, Head of Protocol of the Department for External Church Relations Igumen Theophan, staff member of the Secretariat for Inter-Orthodox Relations A. Khoshev, and Serbian embassy advisors G. Božić and Milojević, the statement said.

Based on the decision of the academic council of the Moscow Theological Academy, led by the Dean and Bishop Kirill of Sergiev Posad and Dmitrov, the head of the SOC will be awarded the honorary doctorate in theological sciences (honoris causa) for his scientific and educational contribution to the development of theological science and the strengthening of ties between the two sister churches.

The two patriarchs will serve the Divine Liturgy on April 25 in the Dormition Cathedral of the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, and Patriarch Porfirije, along with the Serbian Patriarchate’s delegation, will also visit the SOC Representation in Moscow, as well as monasteries and other major holy sites in Moscow during Bright Week.
