Two and a half months have passed since the tragedy in Novi Sad, and the mother of 27-year-old Stefan Hrka, who died in the collapse of the canopy, repeats the same question – who is responsible? Dijana Hrka, in an interview for N1, says that even after the indictment was filed, it seems to her that someone is being protected. She also spoke about student protests and November 1st.
The news of the canopy collapse at the Novi Sad Railway Station caught her at home, and as she says, she initially thought it was nothing too serious and that it was just an ordinary canopy at a bus stop.
“We got there. I told the inspector that I wanted to see him. I went upstairs, he asked me ‘are you ready’, I said – yes. It was terrible, seeing my child like that, but if I hadn’t seen him I couldn’t have taken it,” Dijana tells N1info.
Commenting on the fact that government officials initially stated that the canopy had not been reconstructed, and then it was discovered that it had been, she says that everyone is to blame for her.
“Why doesn’t everyone do their job responsibly? Why does someone’s aunt, grandmother, aunt, uncle, it doesn’t matter what family line, always have to be involved? Why are such people in positions? Why is someone being protected? It’s not clear, some are protecting themselves, some are accusing each other. Everyone is guilty. For me, everyone is guilty. They all signed. If you don’t want to do it, that’s your job. If you see that there is an irregularity, resign, quit. There is a solution for that. Our state is killing us, our system is killing us. Let someone once say ‘I’m guilty’. Everyone is never guilty, and that canopy didn’t fall on its own,” says Dijana Hrka.

What motivates her to continue, she says, is to find out who killed her child.
“I will never be at peace. I will never have that peace in my heart, I already don’t have half of it. I don’t live to live, I live to survive. I have that other child to think about, but in a way, I would say, I would be calmer if I knew. Who is killing our children? Who is behind all this? Why can’t we stop this crime? It’s a crime, it’s a kind of crime. Corruption and crime, it’s one and the same for me, one cannot exist without the other,” says Stefan Hrka’s mother.
She also asks why no one reacted to the warnings.
“Why are they building bridges, building roads, building everything… Should we go out tomorrow and everywhere, and stop and think if something is going to fall on our feet, if we are going to sink, or if something is going to fall on our head. I don’t know. It’s terrible. I don’t know what to say,” she says.
When it comes to the protest on Slavija where over 100,000 people stood in silence for 15 minutes for those who died in the canopy collapse, she says that on the one hand it made her sad, and on the other hand it was beautiful.
“You’ll understand what I mean. But when you see so many people unite, you can’t be indifferent and you can’t say that they all want evil. They don’t want evil. Nobody went there, didn’t fight, didn’t vandalize, didn’t do anything. People came out, they all stood silently. Imagine how we felt when we looked at all those people,” she said.
