Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commented on Novak Djokovic’s latest statements about his deportation from Melbourne, saying he was shocked that the previous federal government had prevented the Serb from seeing his Orthodox priest during the Christmas holidays.
Novak gave an interview to the “Herald Sun” in which he admitted that he still feels traumatized when he sets foot on Australian soil, due to his deportation in 2022. Albanese revealed a lesser-known fact to journalists on this occasion.
@I expressed my comments at the time, and I found it unbelievable that Novak Djokovic, on the eve of Christmas, was prevented by the then federal government from seeing his priest. I think that was hard to justify at the time.@
On the other hand, the Premier of Victoria, Jacinta Allan, tried to avoid the topic of deportation and focus on the upcoming Australian Open, which will be held from January 12 to 26.

“Responsibility for issuing visas lies with the federal government, and those decisions were made by the federal government at the time. COVID was tough on all of us. It didn’t matter who you were, where you came from, COVID didn’t discriminate in terms of who it infected, how sick it made you, and how many people it made sick in our community”, the Premier said and added:
Now we are focusing on supporting a fantastic Australian Open. This AO is dedicated to all the players, all the great people, and the team that organizes this global event. We expect huge crowds and a lot of activity, while the eyes of the world will once again be on Melbourne and Victoria.
