Bishop Grigorije of Düsseldorf today addressed protesting students and citizens, as well as police officers carrying out brutal actions, with a message that no night can conceal evil and no darkness will last forever. He added that it is an “eternal truth” that “God is always on the side of the humiliated, and never on the side of tyrants.”
He sent his message via Instagram, and we publish it in full:
“We are witnesses to disturbing scenes in which young people, students, citizens, whose only ‘transgression’ is that they do not agree to injustice, needlessly suffer.
Dear students and dear ‘rebellious’ people, your dignity is your greatest strength. Your peaceful resistance – the most honorable fight for a better and just Serbia.
Dear police officers and all members of public order and peace, brutality against the innocent, and this people is innocent, is not a sign of strength, but of fear from the other side of the shield. And fear is not from God.
If you cannot stand with those who peacefully fight for truth, justice, and freedom – you are obliged, at the very least, to preserve your conscience. And regardless of any orders – do not use excessive force. Stop the senseless and reckless arrests. This is not politics – this is the Gospel.
There is no night that can cover evil. There is no darkness that will last forever. Therefore, this applies to everyone: do not be afraid. Stand peacefully, but firmly. Do not allow unnecessary violence to corrupt you. Do not give up your dignity.
For the eternal truth remains: God is always on the side of the humiliated. Never on the side of tyrants.”
