Iranian state television, known as the “Voice of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” announced the news about the election of Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader, stating that he was “wounded in the war,” reports the Fokus agency.
State television presenters describe him in reports as a person who was wounded by the enemy during the war “Ramadan,” as Iranian media call the current conflict. However, no additional details about his health condition have been announced.
The father of Mojtaba Khamenei, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as well as his wife, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Tehran on February 28, at the very beginning of the war.
Since then, Mojtaba Khamenei has not appeared in public. He was proclaimed the new Supreme Leader of Iran last night, after a vote by Islamic religious leaders, ayatollahs in the Assembly of Experts, writes Vesti.bg.
According to that body, one of the key reasons for his election was a statement by US President Donald Trump, who called the son of Ali Khamenei “unacceptable.”
Mojtaba Khamenei is considered a person who has good connections with the Iranian military, but the fact that he is succeeding his father to the highest position in the state reminds many of a monarchical system, which the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979 was directed against.
Mojtaba Khamenei is expected to address the nation today as the new Supreme Leader, but so far he has not appeared publicly.
