A car plowed into a crowd of people at a Christmas market in the central German city of Magdeburg on Friday evening. According to German media reports, at least 11 people were killed, but there are fears that the death toll could be higher. Between 60 and 80 people were injured.

The driver has been arrested, local authorities told the German news agency dpa.

According to Welt, citing security sources, a man from Saudi Arabia, born in 1974, is suspected of the attack.

He allegedly rented the vehicle used in the attack shortly before the attack. A piece of luggage was reportedly found on the passenger seat.

A Magdeburg police spokesperson said this evening that it is still unclear whether the attack was carried out by a single attacker. After hitting the visitors, the attacker drove “at least 400 meters” around the Christmas market, the spokesperson said.

Scholz: Something terrible has happened

“Reports from Magdeburg suggest that something terrible has happened. My thoughts are with the victims and their families. We stand with them and with the people of Magdeburg. I am grateful to the rescuers and their work in these difficult times,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on the social network X.
