Members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP), the Criminal Police Directorate – Service for Combating Terrorism, in cooperation with the Security Information Agency (BIA) and the competent prosecutor’s offices, have arrested two people on suspicion of having committed the criminal offence of organizing participation in a war or armed conflict in a foreign country, the MUP stated in a press release.
The arrested L. P. (37) and S. S. (1947) are charged with organizing combat-tactical training for citizens of Moldova and Romania, which, as suspected, aimed to train them for more effective physical resistance to Moldovan police officers in the event of riots during the election day in that country, scheduled for September 28th this year.
As is suspected, L. P. organized and financed the training, which was carried out in a catering facility near Loznica, while S. S. is charged with aiding him.
“The training, as suspected, was conducted in the period from July 16th to September 12th for between 150 and 170 citizens of Moldova and Romania. During the search of the suspects’ apartments, the police seized laptops, mobile phones, as well as a device for detecting and tracking radio frequency signals, while a pistol was also seized from the suspect S. S., for which he is also charged with the criminal offence of unauthorized production, possession, carrying, and trafficking of weapons and explosive materials,” the statement said.
After the initiation of an investigation in connection with this case, the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Serbia will request information and evidence from the Republic of Moldova through international legal assistance for the further conduct of the proceedings.
The suspects have been detained for up to 48 hours, after which they will be brought to the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Šabac with a criminal complaint.
