The Minister of Education, Dejan Vuk Stanković, stated today that the primary goal of the educational leadership is for the school year to start tomorrow in primary and secondary schools regularly and solemnly.

“If education is instrumentalized for political goals, we will assess the situation and act according to the law,” Stanković said in an interview for the Politika newspaper.

He said that he “wants to believe that blockades are a thing of the past,” and that political conflicts are conducted without obstructing important social systems such as education.

When asked about the announced protest of high school students, he stated that high school students who want to express their political views should also separate education from politics because it is primarily in their interest.

“The law is clear. Absences from classes will be recorded unconditionally, and they cannot be justified by political reasons,” Stanković warned.

He also said that in the past school year, 75 school directors resigned for various reasons, also stating that 25 directors were relieved of their duties based on the findings of the educational inspection.

“In Serbia, there are a total of 1,860 primary and secondary schools, and the same number of directors of those schools. Four per cent of the directors resigned, and only 1.3 per cent were relieved of their duties. Therefore, the Ministry of Education has not taken any massive repressive steps,” Stanković said.

He emphasized that the reasons for the dismissal of directors are based on the findings of educational inspections and are based on the law, as well as that the blockades of school work are not legal.

He also said that contracts for teachers for a fixed period are defined according to the needs of the teaching process and it is up to the school directors to assess whether someone should be further engaged in accordance with the needs of the organization of classes.

“I do not see politicization in the fact that someone did not get an extension of their employment contract. And if I were a director of a school, I would have great and good reasons to terminate the employment contracts of an employee who violated the law and obstructed the teaching process, because as a director I would be responsible for the organization of the school’s work and there would be no place for those who obstruct the work process in the institution I manage,” Stanković said.
