While most people from Serbia move to the United States in search of better opportunities and a more secure livelihood, there are those whose journeys are driven by very different reasons.

Such is the story of Milan Andrijanić, a veteran of Serbian folklore and long-time artistic director of the renowned cultural ensemble KUD Abrašević. Thirteen years ago, Andrijanić left Belgrade and headed to Chicago—not for work, but for love.

Upon arriving in America, Andrijanić offered to volunteer with local Serbian churches to teach children traditional dance, but none took him up on the offer—simply because they had never heard of him. However, one Macedonian woman did, and thanks to her support, Milan was able to continue doing what he loved most. He first joined the group SOKO at the Church of the Resurrection in Chicago, and later went on to found his own ensemble, “Oko Sokolovo.” Over time, it became recognized as the best Serbian folklore group in the United States, winning numerous awards at international dance festivals.

Beyond his success in dance, music, and traditional arts, Andrijanić is also one of the most active members of the Serbian Theater of Chicago. There, he has directed, written, and acted in several plays, further solidifying his reputation as a leading cultural ambassador within the Serbian-American diaspora.

Andrijanić emphasizes that folklore is one of the most powerful tools for preserving tradition among younger generations abroad. He uses special techniques and creative methods in his work to encourage youth to stay connected to the Serbian language and heritage.

Watch and listen to the inspiring story of a man who dedicated his life to Serbian youth and culture—overcoming countless challenges, yet never giving up on his mission.
