Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Thursday that he hopes the West has taken “seriously” the recent use of a hypersonic missile by Moscow in Ukraine, and warned that Russia is ready to use “any means” to defend itself.
The United States and its allies “must understand that we would be ready to use any means to prevent them from succeeding in what they call a ‘strategic defeat of Russia’,” Lavrov said in an interview with American journalist Tucker Carlson.
Russia fired its new “Oreshnik” hypersonic missile at the Ukrainian city of Dnipro two weeks ago in a major escalation of the nearly three-year war.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has since threatened to use weapons in an attack on Kyiv in response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory.

“We are sending signals and hope that the last one, a few weeks ago, with the new weapons system called ‘Oreshnik’… was taken seriously,” Lavrov said.
While insisting that Russia does not want to escalate the situation and wants to “avoid any misunderstanding” with Washington and its partners, Lavrov warned that he would “send additional messages if they do not draw the necessary conclusions.”
Putin said the “Oreshnik” missile flies 10 times the speed of sound and cannot be intercepted by air defenses. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the attack “the latest onslaught of Russian madness” and appealed for updated air defense systems to face the new threat.
American journalist Tucker Carlson, in an interview with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, also mentioned China when questioning the consistency of countries’ behavior. Responding to Lavrov’s words that the West forced the people of Ukraine to choose who they would be with – the EU or Russia, Carlson said:
“But that’s the way big countries behave. I mean, there are certain orbits, and now it’s BRICS versus NATO, the US versus China, and it sounds like you’re saying the Russian-Chinese alliance is permanent. Responding to this question, Lavrov said: “Well, we are neighbors. And, of course, geography is very important.”
The interview focused on acute issues such as the Ukrainian crisis, relations between Russia and the United States, and the situation in Syria.
