An Israeli airstrike hit a residential building in northern Lebanon on Monday, resulting in at least 18 deaths, according to the Lebanese Red Cross.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment, and it was unclear what the target was. The strike hit a small residential building in the predominantly Christian village of Aito, far from the main areas of influence of the militant group Hezbollah in the south and east of the country, AP News reports.

Video footage from Lebanese media showed a large cloud of smoke rising from the hilly village, with several destroyed vehicles next to the heavily damaged building, as people attempted to pull bodies from the rubble and trees.

The strike followed a day after a Hezbollah drone attack on a military base in northern Israel, which killed four soldiers, all 19 years old, and severely injured seven others in the deadliest attack by the militant group since Israel began its ground invasion of Lebanon two weeks ago.
