The most decorated coach of all time in European basketball resigned on Wednesday, after which protests by fans began, followed by a welcome at the airport, acceptance, then withdrawal of the resignation by the club’s management and president Ostoja Mijailović, whose dismissal was also personally requested by Obradović.
Many concluded that Aleksandar Vučić, the president of Serbia, was behind everything, blaming him for the general situation in the country and for influencing sports through his people in club administrations, especially in cases like Željko Obradović, who had publicly supported protests and before that had been asked to sign support for him personally.
In one of his addresses through the pro-government “Informer,” he responded to the ironic question of what he thinks about being accused of being responsible for Željko Obradović’s departure.
“Probably because I helped bring him to Partizan, and after that I didn’t interfere in anything and because I remained silent at all the shouts and calls and never said a single word, while we helped that club a great deal,” Vučić said.
He then brought the Partizan football club into the story, as well as Red Star.
“I must say that FK Partizan had the biggest support from the state of all the clubs, and in the last several years the support of the state throughout the entire world. We helped FK Crvena zvezda somewhat less than Partizan, just as we significantly helped the basketball club Partizan but somewhat more Crvena zvezda. I am very honest and objective, always ready to present exact numbers. As for KK Partizan, I must say one good thing – that club regularly settles its obligations to the state and because of that I am very happy and can only praise them. In business terms, regardless of the help from the state which is significantly greater than what they claim, that club settles its obligations to the state. I hope that Crvena zvezda will soon settle its obligations to the state as well,” the president emphasized.
Whether with this praise for the management he indirectly took their side in the rift with Obradović remains for everyone to judge.
We also remind you of his words from the end of last year when Željko supported the student protests.
“For lithium, Novak Đoković and Ivana Španović supported it… And Željko Obradović, he has been against us every time, nothing secret or new about that. And Bogdan Bogdanović was also on the same side regarding lithium. Do you perhaps have Nikola Jokić to mention or Neđa Jovanović… It is their right, I have no problem with it, that is democracy, pure delight… I accept that in a sportsmanlike manner, but don’t take away my right to think differently.”
At the end of the day, everyone chooses the company they want to keep.”
