Goran Marković, film director, screenwriter, writer, and professor emeritus, sent a letter to the Fifth Belgrade High School, of which he was a student himself, regarding the current events.
Marković, as Danas writes, reacted to the decision of the acting principal Danka Nešović, who fired the professors of that high school, who supported the righteous student rebellion, as the students of the Fifth High School announced while blocking it.
We are transmitting the letter of Goran Marković, which he published on his Facebook page, in its entirety:
Dear students, professors, and non-teaching staff of the Fifth Belgrade High School
I am addressing you as a student of your school from 1961 to 1965.
That year, I embarked on life ready for everything that awaited me in it.
Ready, not because I was special but because I finished the Fifth, the best high school in Belgrade, with the best professors and the smartest high school students who spent perhaps the most important part of their lives in that school.
We, the finished students of the Fifth, became the best doctors, engineers, artists, distinguished professors, and respected experts in all areas of society.
Among other things, the Fifth Belgrade High School, the civilizational pillar of Belgrade, enabled us to do that.
Today, when the primitive government tries to destroy everything that constitutes the spiritual past of our city, the Fifth is one of the first under attack.
The evil company knows well that it will not be able to steal, demolish, and abuse people with impunity as long as this high school stands upright.
The dismissal of teachers who showed solidarity with the righteous student rebellion in our country by the imposed, incompetent and certainly malicious principal is the best indicator of what the criminal company intends to do with the essence of the culture of this nation.
That’s why I must call you to resist the criminals.
The Fifth is our and your school, it is the past but also the future of our city, it cannot be taken from us by some mafia organization whose goal is not enlightenment and the spread of spirituality but the opposite – stupefaction and the removal of the great virtues of the human spirit.
And the nurturing of these virtues has always been the first and most important task of the Fifth.
We, the former students of the Fifth, will help you in this, but you, young people at the beginning of your life, must bear the main burden of the fight.
As your older student colleagues who have been persevering for months in their epic struggle for justice and a civilized life.
Hold on kids, justice is on your side!
