The man who was in the car that exploded in front of the hotel of newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump in Las Vegas committed suicide by shooting himself in the head before the explosion, U.S. police officials announced today.

Matthew Levelsberger (37) from Colorado was a highly decorated member of the U.S. Army Green Berets who had been deployed twice to Afghanistan and likely intended to cause maximum possible damage, experts believe, noting that the vehicle’s steel frame absorbed much of the initial blast force, reports AP.

Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill stated at a press conference today that a gun was found near the man’s feet in the driver’s seat, according to AP.

“Among the charred items found in the vehicle were a firearm, a certain number of pyrotechnic devices, a passport, a military map, credit cards, an iPhone, and a smart watch,” McMahill said.

Kenny Cooper, a special agent with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, noted that the level of sophistication of this attack was not what would be expected “from an individual with this type of military experience,” reports Tanjug.
