The Higher Court in Novi Sad has lifted the detention for four suspects in the ongoing investigation into the canopy collapse at the Novi Sad Railway Station on November 1, which resulted in 16 fatalities and one serious injury.

The same decision extended the detention for five suspects, the court announced.

Detention was extended for another 30 days for Ljiljana Milić Marković, Milan Spremić, Zorica Slavković Marjanović, Dušan Janković, and Dejan Todorović.

Conversely, detention was lifted for Nebojša Šurlan, Slobodan Naumović, Milan Jelkić, and Marina Gavrilović, and they were placed under a measure prohibiting them from leaving their homes, with electronic surveillance, which can last up to three months according to this decision.

The court believes that for these individuals, their presence and the smooth conduct of criminal proceedings can be ensured with a milder measure, considering their personal and family circumstances, and the fact that the defendants are in custody only due to public disturbance.

“All the aforementioned circumstances are, in the opinion of the council, at this moment of such quality and intensity that the purpose of detention can be achieved with a milder measure, namely, a measure prohibiting leaving the apartment, with the application of electronic surveillance,” the decision stated.

In addition to these ten, two other suspects are under house arrest, one of whom is the former acting general director of “Infrastruktura železnice Srbije” Jelena Tanasković.

Former Minister of Construction Goran Vesić is defending himself at large, as the court lifted his detention after several days in custody, accepting his defense lawyer’s appeal.

An indictment was filed against 13 people at the end of last year, but the court returned it for further investigation.

The indictment was filed against J.T., former acting general director of “Infrastruktura železnice Srbije,” G.V., former minister in the Ministry of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure, A.D., former acting assistant minister in the Ministry of Construction, Transport, and Infrastructure, and N.Š., former general director of “Infrastruktura železnice Srbije,” on suspicion of having committed a serious crime against general safety in connection with the crime of causing general danger.

Additionally, the indictment also includes S.N., responsible structural designer; M.J., lead designer of the conceptual design; Lj.M.M., lead designer of the project for the building permit; M.S., rapporteur for structures of the Republic Revision Commission; J.S.M., person responsible for technical control; Z.S.M. and D.J., persons responsible for the execution of construction works; M.G. and D.T., persons responsible for expert supervision, on suspicion of having committed a serious crime against general safety in connection with the crime of improper and incorrect execution of construction works.
