The Slovenian basketball players have advanced to the quarterfinals of Eurobasket in Riga. In the round of 16, Slovenia defeated Italy with a score of 84:77.
The most deserving of Slovenia’s great victory was the phenomenal Luka Dončić with 42 points.
In the first quarter alone, Dončić scored 22 points, double the amount of the entire Italian team.
Slovenia won the first quarter 29:11 and gained a crucial advantage that it never relinquished.
Italy tried to get back into the game and with a great run in the final moments, they got within one point, 77:78.
However, Slovenia managed to collect themselves and ultimately secured a deserved victory.
The only other player for Slovenia to score in double digits was Klemen Prepelič with 11 points.
For the Italian team, Simone Fontecchio led the team with 22 points and five rebounds, while Nijang, who left the court in the middle of the fourth quarter with five personal fouls, also scored in double digits with 12 points and six rebounds, and Gallinari finished the match with 10 points.
Slovenia will face Germany in the quarterfinals.
That match is scheduled for Wednesday.
