Over the weekend, the “9th May” school in the village of Sastavci was the target of a break-in and theft, in which an unknown group of individuals stole IT equipment from several rooms. The greatest damage was done in the computer lab, and the total value of the stolen and damaged devices is estimated at around 1,500,000 dinars. The incident was reported to the competent police stations in Priboj and Rudo, who immediately went to the scene.

“Over the weekend, I was informed by the police station that the school had been broken into and that a significant amount of IT equipment had been stolen from the premises. An investigation was carried out, the damage is extensive, and some of the equipment has completely disappeared or been destroyed,” the school principal, Mladen Polić, told the RINA news agency.

According to him, the thieves targeted the secretary’s office, the teachers’ room, and especially the computer lab, which was equipped with both new and used equipment. The perpetrators forcibly entered the school, damaging doors, walls, and furniture, and parts of the stolen equipment were used by both students and teachers. “Some computers were spares, ready for replacement in case of failure, and now all of that is gone,” Polić adds.

“The school does not have a video surveillance system, but it was planned as part of future projects. The principal states that thefts of this scale have not occurred before, and that the local community is disturbed but also in solidarity. “The locals have provided us with support, and this was a shock to them as well. There have been minor thefts before, but we have never experienced anything like this,” says Polić.

FIND OUT MORE IN SERBIAN:

The school is insured with an insurance company, and they hope that at least part of the damage will be compensated. At the same time, there is hope that some of the equipment will be found, because, according to the principal, the police are on the right track. “The inspectors are doing their job thoroughly. We hope that we will soon be able to return the school system to a functional state and that the students will not suffer the consequences of this attack,” concludes Polić.
