The public and increasingly turbulent fallout between billionaire Elon Musk and President Donald Trump is shaking political and technological circles in America, with consequences already being felt in the market. Just one of Musk’s posts on the X platform – in which he alludes to Trump’s connection with Jeffrey Epstein – wiped over $150 billion from Tesla’s market value and plunged Silicon Valley into a state of uncertainty.

However, in the darker corners of the internet, such as forums dedicated to conspiracy theories, this quarrel is not perceived as real. Supporters of the QAnon movement claim that the conflict between Musk and Trump is merely a carefully orchestrated show – a “kayfabe,” a term borrowed from the world of professional wrestling, describing a fake but convincing drama between “enemies.”

“Smooth-brained people actually believe Trump and Musk are fighting,” wrote one prominent QAnon influencer, AwakenedOutlaw, on X, alluding that the quarrel is merely an element of a so-called “5D chess game” allegedly played by Musk and Trump to deceive Democrats and the media.

It all began when Musk posted: “@realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That’s the real reason they haven’t been released. Have a good day, DJT!” These posts immediately fueled speculation that Musk had allegedly launched an open attack on Trump, but for the QAnon community – it’s just part of a broader plan.

Well-known QAnon promoters, such as Liz Crokin and MJ Truth, soon began to claim that it was all part of a grand conspiracy. “It wouldn’t surprise me if the Deep State created fake evidence against Trump – but their plan will backfire,” Crokin wrote. MJ Truth went a step further, claiming that Musk “literally lived in Mar-a-Lago for several months” and that everything was planned long before Trump’s inauguration.

The conflict, or performance – however one perceives it – has already left serious consequences in the political and technological establishment. Tech leaders are increasingly forced to publicly position themselves regarding this rift, which could shape the outcome of the 2024 presidential elections, as well as the future of free speech, censorship, and the power of digital platforms.
