Protests against the announced arrests of illegal immigrants in Chicago have gained new energy after police wounded a woman who, armed with a semi-automatic weapon, drove a car into a police vehicle. The National Guard, which President Donald Trump sent to the city, is ready for action. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker fiercely opposes Washington’s decision. “Chicago is a war zone,” Washington claims. Over 30 Serbian drivers were also arrested.
Tear gas, rubber bullets, and shooting – this is the result of the police action against protesters in Chicago on the first day, ahead of the announced arrests and deportations of illegal immigrants in that city.
“This city is a war zone,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, accusing the Chicago Mayor of “lying so that criminals can continue to destroy people’s lives.”
Bottles, Tear Gas, and a Shooting
After exchanges of plastic bottles and tear gas canisters, which have been ongoing in Chicago for some time, police claim they were forced to use firearms after an, as yet unnamed, woman drove her vehicle into an official car and slightly injured several police officers.
Federal agents then shot and wounded the woman, who drove herself to a local hospital where, after treatment, she was released for home care, reports the Chicago Tribune.
“Federal agents were forced to use their weapons and fired several shots in self-defense at the American citizen who later drove herself to the hospital,” said Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tracy McLaughlin.
The Trump administration announced in early September that it would launch “Operation Midway Blitz” in Chicago, targeting criminal elements among illegal immigrants. The reason for this action was the death of Katie Abraham, who was killed by a driver who did not have valid documents.
Despite pressure from Washington, Governor Pritzker said that this move contradicts the spirit upon which the US is founded, and that federal troops are being sent to city streets against the will of the local population.
Trump, in the process that led to the deployment of the National Guard in California and Oregon, invoked the law that allows the President to deploy the military to enforce laws in the event of an insurrection or invasion.
Objecting to such explanations from the White House, authorities in Portland managed to secure a court-ordered pause in the deployment of the National Guard. In the case of California, the appellate court is expected to deliver its verdict by the end of the year.
In Illinois, there are no court proceedings for now, but the American Civil Liberties Union has accused the President of trying to intimidate millions of Americans with the military.
Over 30 Serbs Also Arrested
In the operation against illegal immigrants, immigration agents have arrested over 30 Serbian truck drivers in raids on roads across America in the last few days. This has caused great concern and fear in the Serbian community in America, especially in the Midwest region.
The shooting in Chicago is just part of a broader problem shaking Chicago amidst the announced action against immigrants, as the local population has self-organized and is using social media to report the movement of agents to potential targets.
This turn of events has also led to a serious rift between federal agents and Chicago police, whom Tracy McLaughlin accused of refusing to participate in the investigation of the circumstances preceding the shooting.
To make matters more complicated, one of the police chiefs allegedly ordered members of his unit to ignore calls for help sent by federal agents who were surrounded by protesters.
Hostility Towards Federal Agents
From the very beginning of Trump’s action in Chicago, a part of the population has been openly hostile towards federal agents, but voices of reason have also emerged, calling on both sides to reduce tensions.
The situation was certainly not helped by the fact that, not far from the location where the shooting occurred, agents first roughly tackled a demonstrator to the ground and then showered the rest of the group with tear gas.
Demonstrators then started banging on cars with traffic signs, forcing federal agents to retreat. Immediately after that, the protest dispersed.
Frequently, real hysteria also broke out in Chicago, and activists from one of the organizations opposing the deportation of immigrants accused the agents of “shooting at vehicles” via social media.
“Agents are completely out of control,” activists from the organization ICIRR wrote on the X network.
Trump’s action against illegal immigrants began back in June, when members of the National Guard and Marines took to the streets of Los Angeles. “Kidnappings” and “abductions,” as human rights activists called the arrests of illegal immigrants, caused panic reactions among opponents of the new policy, with demonstrators burning garbage cans and hysterically throwing themselves at police vehicles.
In a city where a third of the residents were born outside the United States and where half do not speak English at home, the actions of the Donald Trump administration have caused serious unrest.
Opponents of President Trump claim that the “hunt for immigrants” undermines the foundations upon which American society was built, but a good portion of the population believes that the time has come to end the wild settlement of America, which, Republicans claim, was inspired by the policy of the previous administration.
