The Alternative for Germany (AfD) today filed a lawsuit against the German intelligence service (BfV) for classifying the party as an extremist organization that threatens German democracy.
According to reports, the lawsuit was filed in an expedited procedure, preceded by a warning to the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution in which the AfD demanded that the classification be revoked and announced that if it did not do so by Monday at 8 AM, the party would appeal to the Court, “Bild” reports.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of the party by the law firm Hecker, and it demands that the “plaintiff refrain from classifying, monitoring, and investigating the party” as extremist.

The law firm stated in the lawsuit that the classification negatively affects the AfD. AfD leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla announced that the lawsuit sends a clear message against the abuse of state power to fight against the opposition and exclude it.
“We will not allow politically instrumentalized authorities to try to distort democratic competition and delegitimize millions of votes. The actions of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution are shameful,” the AfD leaders’ statement said.
As reported by “Bild”, the federal court in Cologne, where the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution is located, has jurisdiction over the case.
