A session of the Zaječar Assembly was scheduled for today. According to the announcement, it was supposed to be the continuation of the constitutive session at which mandates were to be confirmed.
But how could it be a continuation, when after that one constitutive session, another session had already been held, which the opposition also claimed was illegal?
As reported by a TV Nova journalist, comments from those present were that a “coup is underway,” while police and security cordons were inside the assembly hall as well as outside the building.
Councilors from the opposition and the ruling party argued constantly. The opposition once again refused to allow the session to proceed, arguing that it was not convened within the legally prescribed deadlines, which was confirmed by a decision of the Higher Court in Zaječar. However, Minister Smnežana Paunović stated that she saw no obstacle for the Zaječar Assembly to be held despite that.

After a smoke bomb was thrown, a recess was declared and all councilors left the hall.
According to reporters from the scene, it was nearly impossible to breathe inside the Assembly building.
One of the councilors said he was not sure what exactly had happened in the hall but emphasized that this session should not have been held.
“This session, in this form, should never have been scheduled because all deadlines had expired. SNS does not respect the law of this country. We are only asking for the law to be respected, and that means introducing a temporary body and calling elections. Everything else leads us into even greater problems—they are wasting money on security while people are not getting paid. This must come to an end. Either we have a state or we don’t. Here in Zaječar, we don’t have a state,” he stressed.
