October 22nd was chosen as the symbolic date for the premiere of the film Dražen as it was Petrović’s birthday, but the first screening in Croatia met with extremely violent reactions.

Offended were all those from Šibenik who had the opportunity to watch the documentary directed by Danilo Šerbedžija and Ljubo Zdjelarević.

Domagoj Nižić plays the main role in the film, and the people of Šibenik are angry because they believe that the film doesn’t show enough of the hometown of the greatest Croatian basketball player.

The introduction shows Dražen at the age of 11 and a half, and the action immediately moves to Cibona. Dražen’s points from the third final game of the Yugoslav championship in the 1982/1983 season are shown in just 20 seconds.

Šibenik is “shown as a province” where Dražen “had the misfortune of being born.” The beginning of that club is not shown at all.

The film has also been criticized for portraying Dražen as a man who only cares about individual results, not team results. The players are shown as unimportant; Mile Kekin played Mirko Novosel, and he barely appears in the film.

The people of Šibenik were quite vocal on social media.

“People from Šibenik (including me) will be mortally offended because you absolutely don’t hear ‘ši-ši,’ but there’s plenty of ‘heja hej ci-bosa.’ But that’s just us. I like that Dražen is portrayed as a human being in the film, and yes, the love story is actually the backbone of the film… For me, the film was finally touching; it’s hard to summarize Dražen’s greatness in one feature film. But the most interesting parts of the film are those short inserts from his playing career… They really carry you away. Dražen is bigger than the film. And everyone who expects a lot will be disappointed. Little Tonko is great, and Cvitešić is also very convincing. But for us Šibenčans, a lot of things will bother us: the reality of the views (walking from the match across Banja?! Where you can see Šibenik in the background), the absence of the hall at Baldekin and the fun and that energy from 1983, certain linguistic bravura that are not Šibenčan but Split… Damn, we’re from Šibenik, we have to criticize,” was one of the comments.

“I’m sorry the film was made that way. The events in the hall and after everything one day later on Poljana in 1983 simply had to be part of the film; that’s where it all began.”

“To make a film about Dražen and not mention Šibenik, the club where Dražen started, is the bottom.”

“Everyone swears by Dražen in Šibenik, shares his pictures… They celebrate his birthdays… And then Danilo doesn’t mention Šibenik at all,” concluded another dissatisfied viewer.
