At least 58 people were wounded, eight of them fatally, in armed attacks across Chicago during the holiday weekend, police announced. This violence comes as the Trump administration considers the possibility of sending the National Guard to Chicago.
In the Bronzeville neighborhood, two mass shootings occurred within 48 hours. Five people, including a 17-year-old who sustained serious injuries, were wounded early Monday morning near 36th and Cottage Grove in Ellis Park. Another mass shooting happened Saturday evening near 35th and State, where seven people were injured in a drive-by attack.
Mayor Brandon Johnson recently signed an executive order opposing the Trump administration’s immigration control plans and the potential deployment of soldiers to the city, while local residents have divided opinions on the presence of law enforcement.
Multiple Fatal Incidents Reported
In addition to the mass shootings, several individual fatal shootings were recorded in Chicago over the holiday weekend:
- In South Shore, a woman was killed in an apartment, struck in the stomach and leg.
- In East Garfield Park, a 29-year-old man was shot and died.
- In Altgeld Gardens, a 43-year-old woman was killed by five men.
- In Englewood, 33-year-old Cedric D. Hicks was killed during an argument.
- In Bronzeville and Humboldt Park, at least 11 people were wounded in drive-by shootings.
- On the West Side, a 14-year-old boy was wounded in the arm and hand, while a 46-year-old man died in the hospital after a triple shooting.
- On the North Side, a 27-year-old man was wounded in the arm but is out of danger.
Police found multiple firearms at the scenes, and in most cases, there have been no arrests as investigations continue.
Overall, the holiday weekend in Chicago was marked by a series of violent events, with mass and individual shootings affecting different parts of the city as the local community tries to cope with the aftermath and divided opinions on potential National Guard assistance.
