The Serbian Orthodox Church and believers celebrate the Annunciation, the day when Christians remember the arrival of the Archangel Gabriel who brought the good news to the Virgin Mary that she would give birth to the Son of God.

“Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.”

With these words, the Archangel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she had been chosen by God to give birth to the Son of God, Jesus Christ, the Messiah and Savior of the world and mankind.

Hence, the Annunciation is considered both a great and a joyful holiday. With this event, the history of the salvation of the human race and the renewal of creation began.

It belongs to the group of feasts dedicated to the Mother of God and is always celebrated on March 25th according to the old calendar, or April 7th according to the new calendar.

The extent to which the Annunciation is respected in our nation is also shown by the belief that even the birds in the forest do not build nests today. It is mostly celebrated by women, for childbirth, and especially barren women pray to the Holy Mother of God.

According to popular belief, until this day passes, people are still afraid of winter. The Annunciation, along with Palm Sunday, are the only two days when it is allowed to eat fish during the Easter Lent.
