It is expected that Biden’s administration will today revoke the U.S. order designating Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism. However, this decision is likely to be overturned as soon as next week after newly elected President Donald Trump assumes office.
Trump’s new Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, whose family fled Cuba in the 1950s before the communist revolution that brought Fidel Castro to power, has long been an advocate for maintaining sanctions against Cuba.

This wouldn’t be the first time such a situation occurred. In the final days of Trump’s first administration, on January 11, 2021, the White House reinstated the same order, which had been lifted during the rapprochement between Cuba and the U.S. in President Barack Obama’s second term.
At the time, Trump’s administration cited Cuba’s support for Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, its refusal to extradite Colombian rebels to Colombia, and, among other reasons, its continued harboring of wanted Americans.
