A student of the Faculty of Technical Sciences was sentenced to 30 days in custody, after participating in a protest on Thursday, August 14.

According to the students in the FTN blockade, the student Nikola and his girlfriend Dunja attended a protest in the city center, in Kosovska Street, where tear gas was fired. After that, his girlfriend felt sick, so they went home.

“On the way, they entered a minimarket, but when they left, an unknown woman and man locked the door and prevented them from leaving the premises. They were held in illegal detention for more than 15 minutes, until two people who introduced themselves as police officers came in and took their ID cards. There were also three other people with them who identified themselves. When asked why they were being detained, they did not receive any answer,” the students state in a post on Instagram.

According to them, even though they introduced themselves as students to the police officers, they were detained until the arrival of the intervention unit, which took them to the Police Administration without any explanation.

“They were separated at the station. Only after an hour was the reason for the detention announced, and the next hour the inspector informed Dunja that she would be released, while Nikola would be held for 48 hours. Dunja’s phone was temporarily taken without any explanation, and around three o’clock in the morning she was released alone on the street, even though she is not from Novi Sad and did not know where she was. She was only shown the direction to the student campus, where she later arrived, exposed to inconveniences by unknown persons,” the students explain.

The student Nikola was questioned after two days, and after that he was sentenced to 30 days in custody, even though, as the students add, “he has never been convicted before and even though he has health problems that make the custody additionally dangerous for his health.”

“We demand: that Nikola be released immediately, that he be given adequate medical treatment and that the increasingly frequent persecution of young, non-violent people who are fighting for a just and free Serbia be stopped immediately,” the students point out.

They believe that this is a clear example of repression and a gross violation of basic human rights.

As they point out, their colleague is known for his persistence, dedication, and tireless activism, and that he was arrested in a completely unjust and shameful manner.

“Nikola is the one who walked from Novi Sad to Niš, Belgrade and Subotica and who was always present at every protest, active on the streets of Serbia. On that journey, he also met his girlfriend Dunja,” the students state.
