Young Užice man Marko Didanović will be remembered by Serbia for a heroic act that took place in the town yesterday, on Christmas Day, when he rescued a girl who had fallen into the fast-flowing and icy Đetinja River.
That morning, Marko couldn’t have imagined that a simple afternoon fishing trip with a friend would turn into a heroic act.
Today, a video of the rescue appeared on the Užice Bulletin Board Facebook page, capturing the moment Marko pulled the child from the water and then climbed onto the steps leading to the river. The fast, icy river he fought against to save the child momentarily drained his strength, and upon exiting the water, he simply collapsed, bent over to rest and catch his breath.
Marko told Kurir about what happened yesterday…
“They say you should start everything on Christmas Day, so Bojan and I decided to go fishing today. We were standing on the left bank of the river, right below the dam. At one point, Bojan yelled to me: ‘Mare, Mare, a girl is drowning!’ He was already running towards me, as I was closer, taking off his jacket on the run, and as soon as I saw the child in the water, I jumped in. I didn’t think much, I just wanted to save the child,” says Marko.
The water was very cold, and the girl was already being carried away by the current. “It was difficult to reach her because she was being carried away by the current, but I didn’t give up. I grabbed her and we got to the shore. It’s good that the child is unharmed, and I will never forget her blue eyes…”
