The administration of Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers in the U.S. Senate and Congress have come under criticism for the way they describe the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran.
While armed conflict rages in the Middle East with hundreds of strikes and a large number of casualties, Washington avoids using the term “war” and instead employs language that strongly echoes Russian rhetoric in Ukraine, calling it a “limited military operation.” This phrasing closely mirrors Russia’s term “special military operation” in Ukraine.
According to CNN journalist Dana Bash, citing a source from the Republican Party, Republicans deliberately avoid using the word “war” because it is considered a trigger. Republican representatives insist that this is a “limited military operation that does not constitute war.”
“We are not at war. We have been engaged for four days in a very defined and clear mission. Our first and foremost duty is to ensure the safety of American citizens. We protect American citizens and troops,” said Republican Mike Johnson.
Critics argue that this language downplays the gravity of the decision to enter yet another major war in the Middle East.
