25 years ago, defending the fatherland, on the front line, by enemy hands, in the battles around the Košare outpost, infantry lieutenant Aleksandar Đurović from Priboj was killed.
It was a bloody Saint George’s Day in 1999, and this May 6th, the hero’s burial place, in his native Crnuza, near Priboj, was visited by former comrades-in-arms and commanders, local government leaders, neighbors, friends, and schoolmates, along with his family.

“Years pass, but memories live on. Heroic deeds must not be forgotten. We must remember. Heroes and their deeds. Because they gave the most sacred thing they had for this country, their lives. On the ramparts of the fatherland, on the holy Serbian land in Kosovo and Metohija, many Serbian heroes remained. Among them was Aleksandar Đurović from Priboj, an active officer, the best in his class, an infantry lieutenant, the commander of the Department of the famous Fifth Battalion of the Military Police,” those gathered at the commemoration of the Serbian hero told RINA.

For the demonstrated courage and heroism, Lieutenant Đurović also received a medal for bravery, and Aleksandar’s comrades, members of the Association of Veterans of the Security Agencies and Military Police of Serbia, come every year to the annual memorial service.

This year, the commander of that heroic Fifth Battalion of the Military Police, Đurica Miličić, was with them, as well as local government leaders, the President of the Municipality Lazar Rvović and the President of the Municipal Assembly Boris Mrdović, and members of the Association of War Invalids and Military Pensioners of Priboj, headed by President Zoran Cvrkotić.

“The premature departure of the young lieutenant to the kingdom of heaven is a great and irreparable loss for our country, especially for his family. Despite the pain, which will never go away, they are proud of his work, and such commemorations strengthen their belief that Aco’s sacrifice was not in vain,” said friends and war comrades.

In addition to the monument at Aco’s final resting place in his native Crnuza, the memorial in the new part of Priboj, whose construction was supported by the local government, also testifies to the heroes of Priboj from the last wars. The municipality of Priboj also has a new idea: to name the barracks of the Serbian Army, which should soon be formed in Priboj, after Lieutenant Aleksandar Đurović.

We believe that the initiative of the local government will be accepted, and that this will be another, but lasting way, to preserve the image and deeds, and to cultivate the culture of remembrance of the heroic deeds and heroes of the nation, such as the hero from Košare, the Priboj native, infantry lieutenant Aleksandar Đurović.
