Goran Bubić, the lawyer for the president of the Republic of Srpska (RS) Milorad Dodik, today filed a request with the Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) for Dodik to pay a fine of 36,500 convertible marks (about 18,700 euros) instead of a one-year prison sentence, the Sarajevo portal Raport announced.
The law allows a prison sentence of up to one year to be “bought out” by paying a fine.
In this way, Dodik avoided the Court of BiH sending a document to his lawyers with the precise date on which he must report to the state prison in Vojkovići, in East Sarajevo, to serve his sentence.
The Court of BiH will decide on this request, but before making a decision, it must also inform the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH about everything.
In addition to a one-year prison sentence, Dodik was also legally sentenced to a six-year ban on political activity.
Based on the final verdict of the Court of BiH, the Central Election Commission of BiH (CEC) today stripped Dodik of his mandate as president of the RS.
He has the right to appeal that decision.
