The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina ordered a one-month detention for the Serb Dario Ristić from Modriča, who fought on the side of Russia in Ukraine, where he lost a leg during the conflict.
Ristić surrendered to the BiH authorities last week after he found out that an international Interpol warrant had been issued for him, his lawyer Rade Ćulibrk confirmed for the portal Detektor, which follows trials before the judiciary in BiH.
He was arrested at the Sarajevo International Airport, and then transferred to the jurisdiction of the Court of BiH, which ordered his detention.
Fighting in the unit “Permian Bears”
The Russian volunteer, originally from Modriča, is accused of participating in conflicts as a member of the Russian military forces in Ukraine. Ristić was recruited in November 2023, after being released from a Swiss prison. In Ukraine, he fought as a member of the unit “Permian Bears”, which has the most volunteers from Serbia.
Last year, Detektor followed Ristić and his journey to the front lines in Ukraine. The videos and photos he published showed his recruitment and training in Russia and Ukraine, all the way to the Donetsk region.
There he was seriously wounded and his leg was amputated.
According to the laws of BiH, fighting in foreign military formations is considered a criminal offense. BiH has so far convicted members of foreign armed formations in dozens of cases, including members of the terrorist organization Islamic State, who often received light prison sentences.
