Many interesting questions were asked to Novak Đoković in the interview with Piers Morgan. One of them was – how would he like to be remembered.
–I would like “a man who touched human hearts” to be written on my tombstone. That is truly important to me. I want to be remembered as someone who always played fair and who always gave his best – Đoković revealed. – This sport has brought me pride, but humanity and compassion are the values I want to leave behind.
He also recalled stories from his childhood, how much it influenced the development of his character.
–When you live in a world that doesn’t know what tomorrow brings, it’s not difficult to face a match point for a Grand Slam title. Back then, the fight was for survival. At that time, tennis was not the most important thing, but how we would survive as a family. Despite that, my parents somehow found a way for us to get through it and were a great team. They sacrificed a lot for me to continue building a professional tennis career, and I know they did a lot to protect me. For a long time, they hid a lot from me, while they suffered a lot. They sacrificed a lot for me to become a tennis player and play the sport I love.
Nole specifically spoke about his mother Dijana:
–My father was a man who always knew how to survive. Our mother guided us through life, prepared meals, cooked. And Dad did everything for the family to survive. It was very difficult, but that’s life. When I look back at all of that now, it is an experience for which I am very grateful. There were, of course, some things that they couldn’t hide and that were obvious. My mother always had the stability to keep us all together. She is an incredibly strong woman, a true inspiration, because she managed to endure everything alongside four men in a very small apartment, to provide everything for everyone.
