Wild scenes were recorded Friday evening on the A2 motorway near Traiskirchen, Austria, where a group of about 50 masked hooligans attempted to block the roadway.
Police intervened after a series of dramatic calls around 9:00 p.m. reporting chaos on the road, burning cars, and traffic accidents.
Although strong security forces, emergency medical services, and a helicopter were immediately dispatched to the scene, it turned out that reports of fires and damage were exaggerated.
Still, police had to push back around fifty masked individuals who had parked their vehicles alongside the highway and tried on foot to enter the roadway itself. During searches, more than 40 clubs were seized, but none of those present were officially arrested.
It is believed that the instigators of the incident were fans from Serbia, who planned a confrontation with a rival group from Croatia. On the same evening in Vienna, a game was played between Bea and Croatian team Zadar (Zadar won 86–77), which served as the pretext for this dangerous meeting on the highway, according to one of Austria’s best‑known media outlets, Kronen Zeitung.
Unfortunately, the emergency services’ intervention was not without victims. A fire truck responding under rotation to the reported fire collided with a car on road B17 and then crashed into a traffic light while trying to avoid a direct collision.
Six people were injured in this accident, including four firefighters, and according to initial information, all sustained minor injuries.
