Two people were shot in their vehicle on the South Side of Chicago this afternoon before colliding with a van, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) reported.
A 26-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man were in a car on the 7900 block of South May Street in the Gresham neighborhood around 1:25 PM when shots were fired at them, according to police.
Their vehicle then crashed into a van, CPD said. The woman was struck multiple times and transported to Little Company of Mary Hospital in critical condition. She later succumbed to her injuries, police confirmed.
The man was hit twice and taken to Christ Hospital in stable condition.
Michael Fleger, a father from St. Sabina Church, said a baby was in the back seat of the victims’ car, but the child was unharmed. The godfather of the shot woman confirmed that her daughter, under one year old, was in the back seat of the sedan.
“You know, the baby was in the car. These animals have no sense of the value of life. This means nothing to them. They need to clean up this city. They must. There are gangs, shootings, and killings. It’s simply unbelievable,” said the godfather, Pastor Kirk Bel.
The van driver refused medical attention.
A helicopter was over the scene around 2:40 PM. The white Chevy sedan collided with a brown van, and the sedan’s windows appeared shattered. Bullet holes were also visible on the sedan.
Based on evidence markers on the ground, more than 50 rounds were fired. Video footage shows three individuals dressed in black with hoodies carrying out the attack and fleeing in an unknown direction after raking the car with gunfire.
No arrests have been made so far, and detectives are investigating. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.
