The Court of Justice of the European Union (ECJ) ruled that EU member states must recognize a marriage between same-sex citizens that was legally contracted in another member state.
The decision was made in the context of a dispute with Poland, which did not recognize a marriage between two Polish citizens contracted in Germany, claiming that Polish law does not allow same-sex marriages, Reuters reported.
“The refusal to recognize a marriage between two Union citizens violates EU law because it infringes on the freedom of movement and the right to respect for private and family life,” the court emphasized.
