The Harvard, Illinois Police Department announced in a statement that the couple was found when an officer noticed a parked car with its hazard lights on on October 6th. When the officer approached to look inside the car, they were both found deceased. They were later identified as Rachael Dumović (29) and Brandon Dumović (30) from Sharon, Wisconsin, the McHenry County Coroner’s Office told NBC5.
Police stated that both had gunshot wounds, and a handgun was found inside the vehicle. Police did not provide additional details about the couple’s cause of death, but it was announced that the McHenry County Major Investigation Team was activated for the case. While police advised nearby residents to remain in their homes after the discovery of the dead couple, it was later determined that “there is no danger to the community.”
The wedding page on The Knot for Rachael and Brandon describes the couple as “high school sweethearts.”
Rachael described meeting Brandon in high school when she was 12 years old and grabbing his attention by “stealing his cologne from his locker and running off with it.”
The two remained in contact “through many life stages and 15 years of friendship,” Rachael wrote, adding that they began dating in 2022, writes the Serbian Times.
Brandon proposed in the summer of 2023 at Big Cedar Lake in Slinger, Wisconsin, where they married on October 12, 2024.
“We can’t wait to share the next chapter of our love story surrounded by friends and family!” Rachael wrote when she announced the news of the wedding.
Hours before her death, Rachael posted on Facebook: “Chasing sunsets forever. Wish we were back in Greece.” The post was evidently related to the couple’s honeymoon.
