Crvena zvezda basketball players recorded their second defeat at the start of the EuroLeague, this time falling to Bayern in Munich 97:88, with an incredible performance by Andreas Obst, who scored nine three-pointers.
Anyone who watched this game saw something Zvezda has been showing for years – plenty of effort, but in the end, even more collapse. That was essentially the story of this matchup, where Zvezda once again demonstrated its inability to perform when it matters most.
It is clear to everyone that Zvezda is dealing with huge injury problems – that is evident. However, this time, it is about much more than just injuries. Zvezda once again managed to build something in the first half, only to see it collapse at the very start of the second half and roll downhill from there.
Simply put, Zvezda played this game with “only” eight players. While the starters were fresh, they were doing something. But as soon as they were off the court – the situation was completely different.
Zvezda once again showed major weaknesses, especially on defense, where they allowed one of the best shooters in Europe to get open looks from three, which Andreas Obst fully exploited.
Zvezda’s defense, which should be their biggest strength, failed again and was practically nonexistent, which the Bavarians punished. Just like against Milan, Zvezda scored over 80 points, but allowed 100, which says enough about their defensive shortcomings.
We already said after the Milan game that this Zvezda season must change quickly, otherwise it will be “over” already by the time Serbia puts on long sleeves, and this game proved exactly that.
Injuries are a fact, but not an excuse, as coach Giannis Sfairopoulos himself pointed out, since the fish always rots from the head…
In any case, Zvezda hoped for much more, but got the same as their fans – a whole lot of nothing.
If the solution to the problems lies in Donatas Motiejūnas, and possibly another reinforcement at guard, then the red alarms are already flashing over Mali Kalemegdan.
Despite being decimated, Zvezda opened the game very well in the first two minutes. Jordan Nwora scored six straight points and showed that he can contribute a lot, likely becoming the main offensive option of this team over time. Only after that did Bayern start hitting shots. Of their first seven points, Vladimir Lučić and Stefan Jović scored them, while on the other side Chima Moneke hit twice in a row from the free throw line – 7:13.
Lovely finish from Carter from midrange 🔥

Cody managed to break through easily, while Ebuka Izundu followed up on one attempt. Chima Moneke then scored a three-pointer off the dribble, followed by Obst with a three, beginning his trademark display.
By the end of the quarter, Zvezda added two more threes, this time from Cody. He hit a step-back shot, while Bayern missed several attempts – Giffey, Obst, and Jessup all missed, while Baldwin scored. Still, Cody hit another three at the buzzer – 24:28.
Zvezda continued their strong play in the second quarter. Kalinić played great defense, Baldwin missed, then Kalinić scored a tough shot at the end of the possession, only for Giffey to immediately respond. Cody then hit another three. Zvezda’s playmaker was in rhythm, but Obst canceled it out with another triple – 31:38.
Cody missed a three, but Tyson Carter then hit an unbelievable one – an eight-meter shot over a hand. Kamarr Baldwin quickly answered on the other end – 36:41.
Bayern cut the deficit with Da Silva stealing the ball, while Carter stayed hot, scoring with a foul. Isaiah Mike then broke through Zvezda’s defense.
Before halftime, Chima Moneke scored from a very tough position, and Dejan Davidovac also added points. Nwora went to the free-throw line, in good rhythm, but he couldn’t do everything alone. Moneke played good defense on Raythan Mays, but he still made a mid-range jumper – 47:51. Zvezda scored four more before halftime, through Moneke and Nwora, while Isaiah Mike scored on the other end to close the half – 50:55.
Zvezda started the second half well, as Chima hit one of two free throws. McCormack missed, but Nwora scored with a foul on the other end and made the extra free throw. But once again Obst was left wide open and punished them.
Bayern came back as they stole the ball, Baldwin missed a layup, but Obst nailed a three on the second chance. Nwora grabbed a rebound and scored again, but then Isaiah Mike answered with a three – 63:66.
Bayern then took the lead after Chima Moneke received a technical foul, Obst made the free throw, and Isaiah Mike added two more from the line. Davidovac attacked, but handed the ball straight to Stefan Jović.
Jović then delivered a perfect pass to Lučić, who scored, and after Zvezda wasted another possession, Mike drained a three – 72:68.
Bayern only extended their lead until the end of the quarter, as Obst nailed another three, and Semi Ojeleye hit one from deep to cut it slightly at the end of the third period – 77:71.
