WRITER RADIVOJ ŠAJTINAC PASSES AWAY: He wrote poetry, prose, and essays, and his works were translated worldwide!

Serbian writer Radivoj Šajtinac has passed away at the age of 76, the Serbian Literary Society (SKD) announced today.

Šajtinac was born in 1949 in Zrenjanin, studied general literature with literary theory at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade, and was a member of SKD, the Association of Writers of Vojvodina, and the Serbian PEN Center. He was also one of the founders and served for two decades as the editor-in-chief of the literary and cultural magazine “Ulaznica.”

He published poetry collections such as “Oružje ljudski ranjeno” (1970), “Šumi se vraćaju pragovi” (1974), “Darovno putovanje” (1978), “Panglosov izveštaj” (1982), “Suze u lunaparku” (1987), “Očenaš na Tajms skveru” (1991), “Olovni dolov” (1995), “Led i mleko” (2003), and others.

Among his prose works, he published “Banatska čitanka” (1991), “Moj begejski deo sveta” (1994), “Bajke o grmu” (1995), “Čehovija” (1996), “Vez u vazduhu” (1998), “Žrtve bidermajera” (2000), “Sibilski glasovi” (2001), and others, along with essay collections such as “Demogorgon” (1990), “Hotel Čarnojević” (1989), and “Hajka na Akteona” (1997).

The SKD reminded that “Šajtinac’s poetry, prose, and essays have been translated into English, German, French, Spanish, Hungarian, Slovenian, Macedonian, Romanian, Polish, Finnish, Turkish, Slovak, and Greek.”

Šajtinac was the laureate of the “Todor Manojlović” Fund Award for Modern Artistic Sensibility in 2019, and for his poetry collection “Aveti atara” (2020), he received the “Đura Jakšić” and “Vasko Popa” awards in 2021.
