The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, expressed Serbia’s readiness to export larger quantities of ammunition to the European Union, adding that he has no problem if it ends up on the battlefield in Ukraine.
“Buyers can do whatever they want with the goods,” Vučić said in an interview with Cicero, a German monthly magazine specializing in politics and culture, which has attracted significant attention in Ukraine.
As reported by Ukrainska Pravda, Vučić pointed out that Serbia’s ammunition warehouses are full, with particularly large reserves of mortar shells.
He stated that Serbia is ready to “offer everything it has to its friends in Europe,” describing this as “a phenomenal contribution to European security.”
According to Vučić, Serbia needs long-term contracts in order to plan ahead, saying that he has always maintained that Serbia is a neutral country, but is absolutely ready to cooperate with its European friends on military matters and is now waiting for responses from European countries to his proposal.
The official Moscow also reacted to this interview. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia “understands the unprecedented pressure being exerted on Serbia,” as reported by Russia Today in English. Peskov described the issue of Serbian arms exports as “not a simple story.” Earlier this year, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) announced that Serbian companies had been increasing indirect arms shipments to Ukraine through EU member states such as the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.
How much Serbia exports in weapons remains unknown, as the Ministry of Trade has not released a regular report on arms exports for years.
