“Serbia is on the European path; in Davos, I have never heard so little said, everyone just wants to step aside”

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated that Serbia is following its European path while protecting its interests and doing what is best for the country.

Vučić expressed gratitude to the United States for several reasons: halting strategic talks with Pristina, granting an operational license for NIS, not placing Serbia on the visa blacklist for the diaspora—which he described as a political signal—and resolving matters with Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina without humiliating it. However, he questioned where Serbia would go if it were not on the European path.

“Do you think I’m stupid not to understand whether European power will rise or fall? It will fall, that’s certain. Europe’s power will decline, you don’t need to be smart to see that,” said Vučić, adding that Serbia has no other place to live and questioning whether it could gain anything by claiming an eastern path instead.

He noted that Serbia has a free trade agreement with China and maintains excellent relations with the country, which he described as the most Serbia can do in that regard.

“We are on the European path, that is the policy of this country. Perhaps we might change it one day, which we don’t believe we will, but if we do, we must take it to the people in elections,” Vučić said.

He added that Serbia must politically remain cautious and wait for a better moment, while economically striving for progress.

Vučić also remarked on how important the Expo was to the Americans and that it will be the most important event next year.

He commented on the speech by U.S. President Donald Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos, which drew massive interest:

“His presentation was not simple, he is a very intelligent man, but the audience was far too serious and seeking substance,” Vučić said.

Referring to the Davos meeting attended by the most powerful people in the world, including CEOs of Nvidia and other tech companies, as well as global leaders, Vučić said he had never heard so little in a discussion:

“Never before have I heard so little; it has never been emptier,” he said.

He added that everyone is afraid to offend the Americans, leading to clashes between American factions that were discussed during the forum.

“Never a emptier discussion, never a more fearful world, never more nervousness, but never less willingness to participate in anything; everyone just wants to step aside,” Vučić concluded.
