Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić stated today that elections will be called before the legal deadline and that he cannot run for president again, adding that changing the Serbian Constitution to do so is not something he would “even consider.”

“Will I help someone and fight for those whom I believe can lead Serbia into the future to succeed in the elections? I will certainly do that, but from which position is neither the topic at the moment nor could I even say it myself,” Vučić said.

Vučić stated that, “fortunately,” the authority to call elections does not belong to “either Austrian journalists or blockers,” but to the institutions of Serbia, which will call elections in accordance with the Constitution and laws, likely before the legal deadline. The elections will show “what the people will say and who will win.”

He said that Serbia is facing very violent protests, such as those on Tuesday evening. Stating that demonstrators go to the homes of political opponents, as was once the case in Austria and Germany, Vučić added that Serbia “has endured all of this in a very democratic way, without serious use of force.”

The Serbian president also criticized Austrian media for not allowing a “different opinion to be heard” regarding the protests in Serbia.
