Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump plans to end the war in Ukraine by “freezing” the conflict if he wins the presidential election, the Financial Times reported, citing sources close to the former president’s team.
Trump has previously claimed he could end the war in Ukraine within “24 hours,” but did not explain how he would achieve this. Some reports and statements from Trump’s inner circle suggest this could mean pressuring Ukraine to cede some territory or abandon its aspirations for NATO membership.
Republican vice-presidential candidate J.D. Vance proposed in September the idea of freezing the war by establishing autonomous regions and demilitarized zones on both sides of the border, but without NATO membership, according to the FT.

According to one of Trump’s long-time advisors, the new plan would reconsider the Minsk agreements of 2014 and 2015, which were never implemented. These agreements envisioned Ukraine’s territorial integrity with autonomous zones, while the occupied Crimea was not mentioned. Trump’s plan includes the introduction of a “compliance mechanism clause,” which means imposing sanctions for violations of the agreement.
“European countries should take on the role of guarantors and ‘supervisors’ of the peace process, while the involvement of the United States and NATO would be minimal,” the Financial Times reported.
“There are two things America will insist on. We will not have our people in the compliance mechanism. We will not fund it. Europe will pay for it,” added Trump’s advisor.
