US President Donald Trump today once again threatened to impose tariffs on BRICS members, stating that the group would “end quickly” if it ever seriously formed.
“When I heard about this BRICS group, those six countries… I hit them really, really hard. And if they ever truly unite seriously, it’ll end quickly,” Donald Trump said, without directly naming the countries, as reported by Reuters.
He stated that he is committed to preserving the US dollar’s status as the global reserve currency, and declared that he would never allow the introduction of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) in the United States.
BRICS is an organization of emerging countries, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, with Iran, Egypt, and Ethiopia having recently joined. These countries are seeking ways to reduce their reliance on the US dollar, including ideas for a common currency or trading in national currencies.
