U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order completely blocking federal funding for National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).
In the order, signed Thursday evening, Trump stated that NPR and PBS have allegedly presented current events to tax-paying citizens in a biased manner, according to the BBC.
The order instructs the board of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which allocates funds to PBS and NPR, to “suspend direct funding” to “the maximum extent permitted by law.”
Trump emphasized that the board should “decline to provide future funding” for NPR and PBS.

The White House announced that funding news media is “not only outdated and unnecessary, but undermines the independence of journalists.”
However, CPB’s budget has already been approved by Congress through 2027.
More than 40 million Americans listen to public radio NPR each week, and 36 million watch a local television station from the PBS network each month.
