The Kremlin has confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin gifted U.S. President Donald Trump a portrait of himself.

Putin gave Trump’s portrait to U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow earlier this month, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed.

The gift was first mentioned by Witkoff in an interview last week with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Witkoff told Carlson that Trump was “moved” by the portrait, which he described as “beautiful”.

Witkoff met with Vladimir Putin after discussions with Russian officials regarding ending the war in Ukraine. Ceasefire negotiations continued yesterday in Saudi Arabia, where U.S. officials met with their Russian counterparts, a day after talks with Ukrainian negotiators.

During his interview with Carlson, Witkoff recalled how Putin told him he prayed for Trump last year after hearing that the then-presidential candidate had been shot at a rally in Pennsylvania.

“He prayed for his friend,” Witkoff said, recounting Putin’s comments.

In 2018, Putin gifted President Trump a soccer ball. The Secret Service inspected the ball for listening devices before Trump passed it on to his son.

Trump is not the first sitting president to receive a gift from Putin. In 2021, Putin gave Joe Biden a $12,000 writing set during their Geneva summit. Reports suggest that in 2013, he sent Barack Obama a set of porcelain plates and espresso cups.
